2016 at Verizon Digital Media Services: A Look Back at Our Product Accomplishments
This past year has been full of milestones for our platform and services. Here’s a look back on some of our major product highlights:
This year our Edgecast CDN turned nine years old! In that time we have grown to a network that offers over 24 TBps of capacity. We aggressively expanded our coverage with new PoPs in India, South America, Europe and the Middle East.
We’re more secure
In April of this year we announced the general availability of HTTP Rate Limiting, as part of our Verizon DEFEND product. HTTP Rate Limiting is designed to mitigate application (Layer 7) distributed denial-of-service attacks and help customers manage the traffic load on their websites. Combined with our Web Application Firewall (WAF), it will help ensure the security and performance of our customers’ websites.
This year we also announced the general availability of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) support, as part of our industry-leading, integrated Domain Name System (DNS) solution. By adding support for DNSSEC, Verizon is strengthening our commitment to providing you with a fast, reliable and secure DNS service. Customers in the financial industry, government sector or anyone else looking to take advantage of DNSSEC are now able to do so through Verizon’s ROUTE service.
We’re more transparent
As a part of our continuous effort to provide better service, we have also updated our Network Status page with an improved user interface and more proactive notification system to better equip our customers with the information they need to run their businesses.
We’re streaming more live events
In September, we launched our Live Streaming Solution at IBC, which greatly simplifies the process of streaming large live events on the web. It combines an easy-to-use operator dashboard, the simplified workflow of our Uplynk Video Streaming Service, and the scale of our worldwide network to handle the unpredictability of audience spikes during live TV events. Our customers, including large sports broadcasters and emerging over-the-top (OTT) content providers, have seen their live broadcast audiences grow to millions of hours streamed and millions of concurrent viewers.
Our solution even won a 2016 Product Innovation Award, which honors product introductions that serve TV, professional video and broadcast/online radio users.
We’re growing our team and our services
In March of this year, we acquired Volicon, and they became the third service to make up our platform. The Volicon Media Intelligence service is installed in 1,200 broadcast facilities, providing essential monitoring, compliance and quality assurance features for many of the television channels watched around the world.
The first of many planned extensions and integrations involved integrating the Uplynk Slicer technology. Now, with the Volicon Media Intelligence service, broadcasters take the same signal from their monitoring and compliance workflow and use it to stream video over-the-top. With this combined offering, existing Volicon customers dramatically slashed the time required to launch new online video services for their viewers.
Getting ready for 2017
We’ve only mentioned the highlights of 2016, but there are several other updates to make note of that show how our platform is future-proofing our customers’ video services:
- We released our HTML5 player to overcome the demise of Flash and to maintain a quality experience for viewers.
- We’ve upgraded our Slicer encoding analytics with four new metrics to detect audio and video issues and to ensure that Nielsen tags are correctly imbedded. This helps our customers resolve issues in the early part of our end-to-end workflow faster than ever.
- We partnered with Conviva to provide additional video Quality of Experience and Quality of Service reporting. It’s easier than ever to see the great performance that our network delivers.
Here’s to an innovative 2017 and Happy New Year’s!
