Goodbye Adobe Flash. Hello HTML5 Player.

The impending demise of Adobe Flash support in web browsers is a big deal. It is the end of an era, albeit one long in the making. Nonetheless, the time to move beyond Flash is upon us.

The writing is on the wall – Less than 10 percent of today’s websites use Flash (compared to 28.5 percent five years ago per W3Techs). Web browsers are also driving this shift away from Flash, with all major browsers announcing plans to disable Flash playback by early 2017. Chrome (which commands 51 percent of the desktop browser market per Net Market Share) will switch off Flash playback in December 2016; Internet Explorer (30 percent market share) will do so in 2017; Firefox (8 percent market share) will follow in Q1 2017.

One of the cornerstones of Verizon Digital Media Services’ Uplynk Video Streaming service has been to provide TV-broadcast quality, adaptive streaming in devices of all kinds – whether through native players on leading mobile phones and tablets, or through players in browsers.

For web browsers, our player libraries depend on Flash components to work effectively. Given the impending shift in Flash support, we are moving away from this dependency and today, we are unveiling a long-planned update.

We’re excited to announce that all our customers can now access a new HTML5 Player as a beta preview from our Uplynk CMS.


If you are a customer of Verizon Digital Media Services, like established broadcasting powerhouse ABC, or an upstart like Vice Media, you don’t have to change how you’re delivering your video streams. In addition to HTML5/Javascript Adaptive playback, our new player will give customers a fresh new look, easier customization and faster loading times to improve on the great quality of experience you’ve come to expect from Verizon Digital Media Services.
